Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to investigate and select appropriate control measures for common diseases affecting cultured or held aquatic stock. It includes the ability to treat and monitor affected stock.

The unit applies to individuals who are responsible for the control of common diseases in an aquaculture workplace, working under broad direction.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Investigate disease spread

1.1 Participate in routine health monitoring program according to workplace procedures

1.2 Record or report mortalities and moribund stock according to workplace requirements

1.3 Identify commonly occurring diseases

2. Apply control methods for treatment of diseases

2.1 Select control methods according to workplace procedures

2.2 Identify and assess risks and select and use appropriate personal protective equipment

2.3 Administer treatment following workplace procedures and veterinary guidelines

2.4 Notify supervisor promptly about changes to treatments or severity of outbreak

3. Monitor post-disease-control activities

3.1 Check cleaning and sterilisation of work area and equipment are completed according to workplace procedures

3.2 Ensure appropriate disposal of infected or affected stock

3.3 Check condition, maintenance requirements and storage of tools and equipment

3.4 Record relevant data and observations, and report any abnormal records to supervisor
